Lamas and alpacas (South American camelids) are among the oldest domestic animals. Before about 7000 years ago, the inhabitants of the South American Andean regions with the domestication of guanacos and lamas from which the vicuna which later, the alpacas.
The lamas were used because of their size and strong body as a pack animal, however, used the alpacas for their wool production. In South America, both are also suppliers of high quality meat.
